The 1st International Moto Cross in 1969

Almost 50  years of excitement started by two brothers. Bill and Tom Guthery, had a vision for speed. Something all young men and some women have. Their vision became reality in 1969 when they promoted the first International Motorcross held in the United States. The event drew more than 14,000 spectators.

The success of the Motorcross race led to the idea of building the drag strip. Immediately after the track was built in 1970, 71, 72 MCIR held the AHRA Nationals with all time legends, Art Arfons, Don Garlets, Shirley Muldonney, Don Perdomme, and of course Gene Snow. A lot of ground shaking action took place that day with many records being set on that quarter mile track.

In June of 1976, Bill took on a new partner, his wife Shelby. In the years to follow Bill and Shelby worked side by side. They promoted Car Show’s Indoor and Outdoor Tractor Pulls and Motorcross Shows. You name it they promoted it. Even a Rock Concert at the Drag Strip.

MCIR became family with IHRA in 1980 holding points meets until 1988 when the Sports Nationals were born. This race was held at MCIR for 5 years, having the largest racecar attendance of any IHRA Sportsman’s race with 745 entries for one event. For the next 20 years Bill and Shelby were to the Sportsman Racer. Their quarter mile track is a two-timed IHRA ‘Track of the Year’ and Winner of the RPM ‘Track of the Year’ for the United States.

Sadly on May 21, 2005 drag racing lost a great promoter and friend in Bill Guthery. After Bill’s death, wife Shelby took over operations of the Drag Strip for two seasons. Then in January of 2007 Shelby made a decision that she knows Bill would be happy with. The Family Business was passed down to Shelby’s son Mark and his family. With that being said, the 2nd generation was formed. The Primavera family is very excited about this NEW adventure and hopes that every one will continue to come and support MCIR and help carry on the vision that started so many years ago.

On March 3, 2009 we lost another great promoter in drag racing Shelby Guthery.  Shelby retired in 2007 and shared her time between  Flordia and her home here in Ohio . She finally had time to  enjoyed her friends and her family, and was having a great time doing just that.  Sadly in February Shelby took ill and passed away at home with all her family at her side.

Both Bill and Shelby are missed every day here at MCIR.  We have tried to keep the same old family feeling here and we hope to for many years to come.
